Module Overview

Commercial construction operates at a fundamentally different scale and complexity than residential work. While a typical house might cost $200,000–$500,000 and take 5–8 months, a commercial project — an office building, hospital, warehouse, school, or retail center — may cost $5 million to $500 million or more and take 12–36 months. The structural systems are different (steel frames, concrete frames, precast, tilt-up), the coordination demands are exponentially greater (dozens of subcontractors working simultaneously), the code requirements are more stringent, and the consequences of error are magnified. This module provides comprehensive coverage of commercial construction systems and methods. You will learn how structural steel buildings are erected, how cast-in-place concrete structures are formed and poured, how precast concrete elements are manufactured and installed, how tilt-up warehouse walls are cast and lifted, how curtain wall facades are assembled, how commercial interiors are built out, and how the complex logistics of a commercial project are managed. The knowledge gained here builds directly on the materials, soils, structural, and residential construction foundations established in Tier 1.
