Module Overview

Every structure begins below ground. Before a single footing is poured or a foundation wall is erected, the soil beneath the building must be understood, tested, and often modified to support the loads that will be imposed on it. Soil is the most variable of all construction materials — its properties change with location, depth, moisture content, and history. Failures to properly evaluate or prepare soil have led to some of the most costly and catastrophic construction failures in history, from cracked foundations and settling floors to collapsed retaining walls and fatal trench cave-ins. This module provides a comprehensive introduction to soils and earthwork as they relate to construction. You will learn how soils are classified using standardized systems, what properties make a soil suitable (or unsuitable) for supporting structures, how geotechnical investigations are conducted and interpreted, how sites are prepared and excavated safely, how compaction is achieved and verified, and how grading and drainage protect structures from water damage. This knowledge is essential for understanding foundation design, site development, and virtually every other aspect of construction that involves the ground.
